Background of the Study
Online academic journals have become an indispensable component of digital library resources, facilitating access to high-quality scholarly publications. At Federal College of Education, Kano, usability of these online journals plays a critical role in academic research and learning. An intuitive, responsive, and well-organized interface enhances user interaction by simplifying the search and retrieval of journal articles (Yakubu, 2023). Factors such as navigation ease, search functionality, and interoperability with other library systems contribute significantly to overall user experience (Ugwu, 2024). In addition, the integration of advanced filtering and recommendation features helps users quickly locate relevant content, thereby improving research efficiency. This study evaluates the usability of online academic journal platforms at the institution, aiming to identify design issues and technical barriers that adversely affect user satisfaction. By examining user feedback and engagement metrics, the study seeks to offer actionable recommendations for enhancing usability and promoting broader utilization of academic journals (Yakubu, 2023).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the availability of extensive online academic journal collections at Federal College of Education, Kano, users report dissatisfaction related to cumbersome navigation, limited search functionalities, and inconsistent interface design (Ugwu, 2024). Such usability issues hinder the effective retrieval of scholarly articles, thereby impacting the academic research process. The complexity of the search system and the lack of personalized filtering options have contributed to low user engagement and prolonged research times. These challenges underscore the need to evaluate the current usability parameters of online academic journals to ensure they meet user expectations and facilitate efficient academic work (Yakubu, 2023).
Objectives of the Study:
To assess the usability of online academic journal platforms.
To identify specific usability challenges affecting user interactions.
To propose improvements to enhance online journal interfaces.
Research Questions:
How effective is the current interface in supporting academic research?
What usability issues hinder efficient article retrieval?
What design modifications can improve overall usability?
Significance of the Study
This study is significant because it highlights usability issues in online academic journals, which are critical resources for academic research. Enhancing these systems will lead to improved user satisfaction, faster access to scholarly materials, and better research outcomes. The findings will be valuable for administrators and developers aiming to upgrade digital library services (Ugwu, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study:
The study is limited to online academic journal platforms at Federal College of Education, Kano and does not consider other digital library services.
Definitions of Terms:
Online Academic Journal: A digital platform hosting scholarly articles and research publications.
Usability: The ease with which a system can be used effectively.
Interface Design: The visual and functional layout of a digital system.
